Amenities to Include in Public Spaces

Amenities For Existing Public Spaces

While these amenities in and by themselves may not create a place for the community to gather, they can be implemented as part of a larger placemaking project.   So, for the most part, the grant would not fund these amenities as stand-alone projects unless they were integrated with another project and/or other amenities, and/or part of a revitalization of an existing place.

Activate Space: Farmer Markets & Events

A great way to get people to come to a public space, and encourage them to come back, is to activate the space with activities, music, art and other events such as farmer’s markets, craft fairs, art shows, etc.

Three Rivers Association of Realtors® (IL)

Murals and Public Art

Animates public spaces, rejuvenates structures and streetscapes, improves local business viability and public safety, and brings diverse people together to celebrate, inspire, and be inspired. See Timing is Every Thing.

Bronx-Manhattan North Association of REALTORS® (NY)

William H. Whyte liked to say, “people like to sit where there are places for them to sit.” Seating helps to insure that people relax, linger and stay in a place.  See Have a Seat and Stay Awhile

Greater Boston Association of REALTORS®

Kiosks & Wayfinding Signage

Kiosks and signage at trailheads, paths and downtowns can help people know where they are, and how to find community facilities, tourism, cultural and recreational areas.

Western Upstate Association of REALTORS® (SC)

Little Free Libraries

It’s a “take a book, return a book” gathering place where neighbors share their favorite literature and stories.  Residents can build one or more across their community. See Little Free Library.

St. Paul Association of Realtors ® (MN)

And More.

There are a variety of other amenities to add to enhance a public space and make it a destination including flowers and trees, tables, street furniture, bike racks, game boards, pergolas, grills, fire pits, fountains, interactive instruments/toys, and lighting.
